Monotype: Fonts and Feelings

At a major design expo, Monotype sought to demonstrate the emotional impact of typography in a tangible, data-driven manner. The goal was to create an engaging experience that would allow visitors to explore how different fonts evoke distinct emotional responses, thereby deepening their appreciation for type design.

The Challenge

Monotype faced the challenge of translating the abstract concept of typographic emotion into an interactive exhibit that would resonate with a diverse audience. They needed a solution that combined scientific credibility with engaging design to effectively communicate the emotional nuances of fonts.

The Solution

2Pixels developed a hands-on interactive using Emotiv’s EEG headset that tracked participants’ brainwaves as they viewed different fonts. The system measured six key emotional states—Excitement, Engagement, Relaxation, Interest, Stress, and Focus—and visualized the data in real time. As visitors interacted, they could literally see how different typefaces sparked different emotional responses, making abstract design principles feel deeply personal and scientifically grounded.

Final Result

The “Fonts and Feelings” activation became a conversation-starter and a standout feature of the booth. Attendees were intrigued by the fusion of design and neuroscience—and delighted by the personal insights they received. For Monotype, the experience reinforced their position as a thought leader in the emotional and functional impact of typography, while giving visitors a deeper appreciation for the role fonts play in how we think, feel, and connect.
